Perth Wildcats import David Duke is poised to make his long-awaited return to the NBL court this Friday against the Brisbane Bullets, following a series of strong training performances that have boosted his fitness and confidence.
Injury Recovery and Training Progress
Duke has been sidelined since December 28 due to an elbow injury, but his rehabilitation has progressed steadily. He re-entered team training last week and has been actively participating in full sessions throughout this week, showing no signs of fatigue or hesitation.
During Wednesday morning's practice, Duke demonstrated his readiness by running the floor as a point-guard, navigating through traffic to reach the rim, defending with intensity, and sinking three-pointers. His performance left coaches and teammates optimistic about his imminent return.
Coach's Confidence and Team Strategy
Wildcats coach John Rillie expressed his hope that Duke will feature in Friday's game at RAC Arena, provided no setbacks occur in the coming days. "That's our hope," Rillie stated. "As you saw today, he had some great fearless moments. What's been impressive has been the way he has handled and conducted himself through this. What people don't see is the work he's been doing to get to this point."
Rillie emphasised that while training has been rigorous, game situations present unique challenges. "He's out there doing five on five to get through the contact, but there's natural things a game provides that we can't replicate at practice – his game shape and intensity. It'll be great to have him back out there so we can ease him through those situations."
Team Context and Upcoming Fixtures
The Wildcats currently hold fourth place on the NBL ladder with three regular-season games remaining. Their schedule includes a crucial match against the in-form Sydney Kings on Sunday, making Duke's availability even more significant for the team's playoff aspirations.
Despite Duke's importance to the squad and the absence of Jaron Rilie due to a hamstring injury, the Wildcats have exercised patience. Young players Elijah Pepper and Ben Henshall have stepped up as starters, showcasing the team's depth and resilience.
Progression and Future Outlook
Rillie noted that Duke's recovery has exceeded expectations. "If you get through one practice you go 'yep'. But now we are two or three practices into that. From a confidence standpoint it has been a really progressive week," he explained.
The coach added that Duke's return will be managed carefully. "It'll really depend on how he pulls up and how he goes once he plays. We want to make sure he is ready for that. Once he does hit the ground running, we are at the pointy end of it, so we're very mindful of making sure he is comfortable."
With the playoffs looming, Duke's potential comeback could provide a timely boost for the Wildcats as they aim to solidify their position and make a deep postseason run.
