Perth Lynx standout Anneli Maley is poised to potentially claim her second WNBL Most Valuable Player award after delivering an epic triple-double to cap off the regular season. The co-captain's remarkable performance has sparked excitement among fans and teammates alike as she prepares to travel to Sydney for the league's prestigious awards ceremony.
Coach Praises Maley's Dominant Season
Lynx head coach Ryan Petrik has openly declared that Maley could have recorded even more triple-doubles this season if he had allowed her increased court time. Petrik emphasised his strategy of managing her minutes to keep her fresh for crucial moments, particularly with the upcoming semifinals in mind.
"If I hadn't subbed her out so frequently this season, she might have achieved four triple-doubles this year alone," Petrik stated. "We wouldn't trade Maley for anything in the world. Her overall contribution has been immense."
MVP Competition Heats Up
Maley faces stiff competition for the MVP honour, contending with other elite players including Bendigo's Isobel Borlase, Townsville's Courtney Woods, and Geelong's Mackenzie Holmes. Petrik acknowledged the tough field, noting that whoever emerges victorious will have edged out exceptionally talented rivals.
"Borlase and Woods are both elite performers, and Holmes is equally outstanding," Petrik commented. "It's a highly competitive group, so the runners-up will undoubtedly be unfortunate."
Maley's Personal Reflections
Despite being a frontrunner, Maley herself tipped Borlase to win the MVP award. However, she reflected that this season has clearly been her most productive and intelligent campaign in the WNBL.
"Playing with such a strong team has allowed me to operate in a more controlled and effective manner," Maley explained. "My shooting decisions have improved, and my basketball IQ feels significantly higher compared to when I previously won the MVP."
Lynx Celebrate Internal Awards
Maley's exceptional season was recognised locally when she received the Perth Lynx MVP award at the club's season celebration held at the Swan Yacht Club. Other award recipients included:
- Alex Ciabattoni as runner-up for the Lynx MVP
- Han Xu claiming the Best Defensive Player award
- Ally Wilson securing the Golden Hands prize
Strategic Rest for Key Players
With the semifinals against Bendigo approaching next week, the Lynx are taking precautionary measures with several stars. Wilson, Xu, Amy Atwell, Alex Ciabattoni, and Gorman will remain in Perth instead of traveling interstate for the awards ceremony.
Lynx General Manager Chris Earl clarified that these decisions are medically motivated. "All these players are managing various injuries," Earl noted. "We're not simply resting them; there are legitimate health considerations behind these choices."
As the basketball community awaits the WNBL awards announcement, Maley's triple-double achievement and consistent excellence have positioned her as a formidable contender for the league's highest individual honour, potentially making her the first Perth player to ever receive this distinction.
