Australian boxing sensation Tim Tszyu has captured the WBO international middleweight title with a commanding unanimous points victory over Albanian contender Denis Nurja. The bout, held in Wollongong on Sunday, saw Tszyu deliver a masterful performance that has significantly bolstered his standing in the global boxing scene.
Dominant Display Sets Stage for Future Mega-Fight
Tszyu's win was decisive, with all three judges scoring the fight 100-88 in his favor. This victory not only earned him the WBO international middleweight belt but also marked his first consecutive wins since 2023. More importantly, it secured him the coveted WBO No.1 ranking in the junior middleweight division, putting him in prime position for a world title shot.
The Sydneysider's dominant display included a knockdown of Nurja in the fourth round, though he was unable to secure a knockout against the resilient Albanian. Tszyu showcased his versatility by skillfully alternating between head and body shots, landing numerous punishing blows throughout the ten-round contest.
Injury and Determination on Display
Despite a significant cut under his left eye from a head clash early in the fourth round, Tszyu continued to press the attack. He dropped Nurja with a left to the head just over a minute later and maintained relentless pressure in the subsequent rounds. Referee Les Fear deducted a point from Nurja in the seventh round for holding, further highlighting Tszyu's control of the bout.
Eyes on the Prize: Errol Spence Jr and World Title Ambitions
With this victory, Tszyu remains on course for a highly anticipated mega-fight with American superstar Errol Spence Jr. When asked about the potential matchup, Tszyu expressed confidence, stating, "I feel like I'm up for it. It will be one hell of a fight, a banger. You know how I am, I don't take a backward step. You know what they say, 'Catch the big fish' - let's go fishing."
Currently, the WBO champion in the junior middleweight division is Puerto Rican Xander Zayas, who is scheduled to defend his title against American Jaron Ennis in New York next month.
