Carlton Coach Michael Voss Dismisses External Noise Amid AFL Club's Struggles

Carlton coach Michael Voss has firmly stated that he is ignoring the majority of the intense scrutiny surrounding his embattled AFL club, adamant that key stakeholders remain united and on the same page. The Blues, with a disappointing 1-3 record, have endured a horror start to the season, with significant attention focused on their costly second-half meltdowns in recent matches.

Nowhere to Hide in Gather Round Showdown

There is absolutely nowhere to hide for Carlton as they open the annual Gather Round feature in South Australia against the home side Adelaide on Thursday night. This high-stakes clash comes amid growing external pressure and speculation about the team's performance and future direction.

Carlton football boss Chris Davies was questioned on radio last weekend regarding Voss's future as coach, and he guaranteed that no moves would be made before the crucial fixture against the Crows. However, former Melbourne great and prominent commentator Garry Lyon has since suggested that Carlton and Voss are headed for what he described as "probably an inevitable parting of the ways."

Voss Remains Focused on Steering Blues Out of Rut

Despite the swirling rumors and criticism, Voss, who was backed by the club last August to at least see out the final year of his contract in 2026, remains steadfastly focused on attempting to steer the Blues out of their current rut. "I don't pay any attention to it," Voss said of the external noise. "At some point in time you've just got to get on with the task at hand, and that's what we're doing. I'm not distracted off anything other than just getting the best out of the team and supporting them as best we possibly can to make the progress we need."

Carlton have won just one of eight quarters after halftime this season and have coughed up considerable leads in their past two defeats, against Melbourne and North Melbourne. Voss acknowledged the scrutiny, stating, "We're not winning, so obviously you expect some level of scrutiny. You appreciate that's what's going to happen every single week when you come off a game you should win and you don't end up finishing the job. But also what you have to do is continually look at what's real and what's not real."

Alignment Within Club Despite Frustrations

Despite the poor start to the season, Voss emphasized that he feels no disconnect with the club or its increasingly frustrated supporter base. "No, I don't. Where we're aligned on is we're not happy with where we're at," he said. "I think we can agree on that." This unity is crucial as the team prepares for the challenging test ahead.

Tough Test Against Adelaide Without Key Defender

Carlton will be without vice-captain and defensive rock Jacob Weitering, who is sidelined due to concussion, for the tough test against Adelaide. The Crows are also under pressure after a 1-3 start to their campaign, setting the stage for a high-pressure encounter. Voss highlighted the threats posed by Adelaide, saying, "Adelaide are a team that do bring an enormous amount of pressure, and we've got to make sure that we can absorb that. We've also got to make sure that we can go from inside out really fast because they're a team that can do that. And clearly they've got some scoring threats, so our defence is going to have to be right on."

As Carlton heads into this critical match, all eyes will be on whether Voss and his team can silence the critics and turn their season around with a much-needed victory in Gather Round.
