The top selection in the AFL mid-season draft, Jaxon Artemis, is on the cusp of making his debut for Essendon when they face the West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium this Sunday.
Artemis impresses in training
The 19-year-old midfielder, who was snapped up by the Bombers with the first pick in the mid-season draft, has turned heads with his performances on the training track. Essendon coach Brad Scott confirmed that Artemis is a strong chance to line up against the Eagles, provided he gets through the final training session on Saturday.
“He’s been really impressive since he walked in the door,” Scott said. “He’s got a real hunger to learn and has fitted in seamlessly with the group. We’ll give him every opportunity to play this week.”
Mid-season draft success story
Artemis, who previously played for the West Coast reserves in the WAFL, was overlooked in the national draft but has been a standout in the state league this season. His consistent form caught the eye of recruiters, and Essendon pounced on him with the first pick in the mid-season draft.
If selected, Artemis will become the latest mid-season draft success story, following in the footsteps of players like Marlion Pickett and John Noble, who have made significant impacts at senior level after being picked up mid-year.
Eagles face familiar foe
For West Coast, the match against Essendon presents an opportunity to build on their recent form. The Eagles have won two of their last three games and will be looking to continue their resurgence under interim coach Jarrad Schofield.
However, they will be without star forward Oscar Allen, who has been ruled out with a knee injury. The Eagles will rely on the likes of Jake Waterman and Jack Darling to provide a target up forward.
Bombers aim to consolidate
Essendon, currently sitting in the top eight, will be eager to cement their finals credentials with a win over the Eagles. The Bombers have been inconsistent this season but have shown glimpses of their potential, particularly in their thrilling win over Geelong a fortnight ago.
Scott said his side is focused on improving their consistency and making a push for September action. “We know what we’re capable of, but we need to bring it week in, week out. West Coast are a dangerous side, and we’ll need to be at our best to get the result,” he said.
The match is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Marvel Stadium, with the first bounce at 3:20 pm local time.
