Sydney Coach's Plan to Keep Chad Warner Amid West Coast's Rising AFL Talent
Sydney's Plan to Retain Chad Warner vs West Coast's AFL Talent

Sydney Coach's Strategy to Retain Chad Warner as West Coast's Talent Rises

West Coast Eagles' abundance of A-grade young talent has transformed last year's wooden spooners into a destination club once more, but Sydney Swans coach Dean Cox has a straightforward plan to ensure the rising Eagles do not secure Chad Warner. Warner is currently back in his home state of Western Australia ahead of Saturday's AFL clash with the Eagles at Optus Stadium.

The 24-year-old midfielder declined significant offers from both West Coast and Fremantle before re-signing with the Swans last year on a contract that extends until 2027. While Fremantle might struggle to accommodate Warner into their salary cap due to their star-studded roster, the Eagles appear well-positioned to launch another bid for the gun midfielder at the end of this season or next.

West Coast's Rebuild Strengthens Their Case

Making West Coast's pursuit more compelling is their extensive rebuild, which is showing substantial signs of success, particularly following recent victories over North Melbourne and Port Adelaide. Key young players such as No.1 draft pick Willem Duursma, No.4 pick Cooper Duff-Tytler, and fellow first-round selection Josh Lindsay are on track for stardom. Additionally, the Eagles' list boasts other elite talents including Harley Reid, Jobe Shanahan, Archer Reid, Bo Allan, and Reuben Ginbey, among others.

Cox expressed his desire for Warner to remain with Sydney long-term and is taking all necessary steps to ensure the 2024 All-Australian views the Swans as his best fit, rather than a club on the rise like West Coast. "I don't really look at who's a destination club and who's not," Cox stated in Perth before Swans training on Friday. "I worry about whether people want to come to our football club and whether people want to stay at our football club."

Cox's Focus on Team Environment and Retention

Cox emphasized that his approach centers on keeping all players content and playing the style of football they aspire to, which he hopes will encourage them to stay. "Mine's about trying to make sure that we can keep all our people happy and play the footy we want to play, which will, in turn, hopefully keep them there," he explained. "We'll always speak to Chad about the possibility of staying and, first of all, just creating a team around him that he wants to be a part of."

In other news, prized Swans recruit Charlie Curnow has managed only five goals in three games this season, but Cox defended the former Carlton player. "It's three games, my expectations are he plays a really strong four or five years at our football club," Cox said. "When we got him, we knew it was going to take time to fit into a new team. I don't think you've seen too many key forwards around the competition - when they've gone to a new team - click straight away."

Upcoming Match and Team Updates

Looking ahead to Saturday's match, Sydney (2-1) will welcome back Isaac Heeney, while West Coast will aim to fill the voids left by midfield bulls Elliot Yeo, who is out with a groin injury, and Deven Robertson, who is suspended. This game is set to be a critical test for both teams as they navigate the early stages of the AFL season.
