Wild Scenes at Marvel Stadium as Oscar Steene Celebrates Dream AFL Debut

Marvel Stadium erupted in wild scenes as Collingwood's Oscar Steene delivered a standout debut performance, thrilling friends who had journeyed from across the country to witness his long-awaited moment. Steene, who joined the club in late 2022 and secured his spot as a pre-season supplemental selection period rookie three months later, realized a dream over 1100 days in the making, marking a pivotal milestone in his AFL career.

Inspired Performance and Emotional Support

Proving to be an inspired choice by coach Craig McRae, Steene showcased his talent with 20 hitouts and a maiden goal, following a spectacular contested mark. Partnering effectively with fellow ruck Darcy Cameron, the duo dominated Giants tall Kieren Briggs, contributing significantly to Collingwood's commanding 33-point victory. After the match, Steene was visibly emotional upon spotting his mates in the crowd, highlighting the profound impact of their support.

Steene shared with Channel 7, "Those are all my mates from Adelaide. So they all made the trip over. They drove, some of them drove, some of them flew. One of them flew from Sydney and he's got a game at 12pm tomorrow. So it means so much for me that they all came." As footage showed Steene taking a photo with his friends at the fence, AFL great Dale Thomas remarked on the heartwarming moment, to which Steene humbly responded, "Not sure about that."

Behind the Scenes: A Special Announcement and Mentorship

Steene revealed that McRae had kept the debut news confidential, calling him into his office on Wednesday for a private and special announcement. "Fly took me into his office on Wednesday and, yeah, he just told me between us. And yeah, it was really special. I was happy to hear the news," he said. Meanwhile, Cameron seemed to sense something was afoot and expressed deep emotion in congratulating Steene, praising his resilience through injuries and setbacks over the past few years.

Cameron noted, "He's had a bit of an eventful journey over the last three or four years coming here, he had a few injuries and setbacks, but he's never dropped his head. I feel like some of the coaches this pre-season gave him a bit of a tough time, riding him pretty hard and pushing him to the limit, but he never once dropped his head, which just shows the kind of person he is, he just wants to get better." He added, "The improvement he's made in his game and his body is unbelievable. He's turned himself into an AFL footballer, which he'll be able to say after this weekend, which is special, so I can't wait to play with him because he's a very good man."

Steene, in turn, credited Cameron as a crucial mentor since his arrival at the club. "He's from day one, even when I was just training SSP, he's been so nice to me. He's one of the leaders of the group and it really shows. He saw me go into Fly's office and I think he might have known something was up. So it was good to share that with him. He's been huge for me over the past three years," he said.

The debut was celebrated with a Gatorade shower, symbolizing a triumphant entry into the AFL, as Steene's journey from adversity to success captured the hearts of fans and teammates alike.
