Swan Districts Overcome Star's Absence with New-Look Attack in WAFL Win

Swan Districts have kicked off the season without their biggest weapon, Leigh Kohlmann, but their victory over West Perth on Sunday demonstrated they are far more than just a one-man attack. Kohlmann, a four-time club leading goalkicker, is still recovering from a lower leg issue, forcing the Swans to find cover and adapt their forward line strategy.

New Recruits Step Up in Impressive Performance

The Swans overcame West Perth with a score of 12.14 (86) to 9.10 (64), recording their first win of the season. This success was largely fueled by a four-goal performance from William Reidy, while new recruit Zach Provest continued his strong start with two goals from range. Provest, recruited from Williamstown in the off-season, has proven to be a dead-eye shooter, tallying six goals and just one behind from his first three games. Reidy is flying at an even more impressive rate of 8.1, showcasing the depth of the Swans' attack.

Provest, a 22-year-old forward, expressed optimism about the team's development. "It's been a long summer coming over from Melbourne. It's nice to see what the club looks like after a win," he told The West Australian. "We're moulding together. We've had an interrupted pre-season down in the forward line, but it's just creating the six or seven blokes to see what works best, and we're excited to see Leigh come back. Reidy's a star. We play very similarly, he looks after me on and off the field, he's been great to talk and listen to and learn the different brand and to see him find some career-best form is awesome."

Learning from Tough Early Fixtures

The Swans faced daunting assignments in the opening weeks, playing both of last year's grand finalists. While they put up spirited efforts, they fell away in the final terms of those matches. Against West Perth, however, they timed their run better, lifting in the final term to overwhelm the Falcons' attempted comeback.

Provest highlighted the benefits of these early challenges. "Conditioning always plays a part, and facing the two grand final sides first up, they've shown their class in the last quarter, but we've taken a lot of learnings out of it. It was a key focus for us today to play the full four quarters, and for the last quarter to be our best was really pleasing, and Pruey touched on it in post-match, so it's as we mould together, those consistent performances will come. We know we've got the list and the game plan, and it's just about sticking to it for longer."

Praise for Fellow Recruit Lucas Impey

Provest also singled out fellow Victorian recruit Lucas Impey for praise. Impey squared his battle with Scott Jones on debut last week and recovered from a slow start to outpoint Riley Sprigg on Sunday. "Everyone around the club knows he's a star. He's already built such trust and respect in the group he's a great character off the field, and we all love him, and we know he can go head-to-head with anyone in the league as he showed across the first two weeks," Provest said.

This win underscores Swan Districts' resilience and adaptability, proving they can thrive even without their top scorer as new players step up to fill the void.
