In a dramatic turn of events, the Essendon Football Club has confirmed the re-signing of midfielder Will Setterfield, a mere six weeks after he was officially delisted from their playing list.
From Delisted to Re-signed: A Remarkable Turnaround
The 27-year-old's initial departure came at the conclusion of the 2025 AFL season. However, the Bombers left the door ajar, inviting Setterfield back to train with the squad in the hope a list position might become available. That crucial opening materialised following devastating news for teammate Nic Martin, who re-injured his reconstructed knee at training and has been ruled out for the entire 2026 season.
A Valuable Contributor When Fit
Setterfield proved his worth during the Bombers' disappointing six-win campaign, featuring in 13 games and often standing among the team's best performers. He averaged over 20 disposals and seven tackles per game before his season was cut short by a foot injury in Round 18. The club has confirmed he is still recovering from that setback but is targeting an early return in the 2026 season.
Across three seasons at Essendon, Setterfield has played 27 senior games, bringing his career total to 84 matches since being taken with pick No.5 in the 2016 national draft. His journey began at the GWS Giants, where he played two games, before a four-year, 55-game stint at Carlton.
Gratitude and Commitment from Player and Club
Expressing his relief and gratitude, Setterfield acknowledged the privilege of continuing his career in the red and black. "Every year you get to wear the club colours is a privilege, so I’m really grateful for another season in the sash," Setterfield said. "I look forward to working closely with our high-performance team on getting my body right. The club’s support has been amazing... I want to be ready to give everything for the team in 2026."
Essendon's list manager, Matt Rosa, echoed the sentiment of satisfaction at securing Setterfield's services for another year. "We’re thrilled for Will. He’s had a tough waiting game over the last few months, so it’s great to see a well-deserved opportunity open up for him," Rosa stated. "He’s been terrific for us in a bunch of different midfield roles... Will’s a popular member of our squad and the boys are rapt he’s got another crack at it."
This re-signing provides Essendon with experienced midfield depth as they plan for a 2026 season now missing the services of the injured Nic Martin, while giving Setterfield a chance to continue his AFL career after it appeared to be at a crossroads.
