Outspoken Lad Wins Diggers Cup for Brad Parnham at Ascot
Outspoken Lad Wins Diggers Cup at Ascot

Outspoken Lad, a seasoned country cups specialist, delivered a stunning victory in the $100,000 Diggers' Cup (1800m) at Ascot's Anzac Day meeting on Saturday, triumphing over his city rivals.

Race Summary

The seven-year-old gelding, ridden by jockey Brad Parnham, surged to the lead upon straightening and narrowly held off challengers River Rubicon, Fancy Red, and the odds-on favourite Royal Toronado in a thrilling finish. Bookmakers had listed Outspoken Lad at approximately $9.00 before the metropolitan event.

Pearce Stable Treble

The win capped a remarkable treble for co-trainers Dan and Ben Pearce, who had earlier celebrated victories with Cos I Am and Noble Connection. Ben Pearce revealed that Outspoken Lad was fortunate to still be racing after a serious stable injury.

Injury Comeback

“He ran fourth in the WATC Derby, but then fractured a tibula (shinbone) in an accident on the water walker as an early four-year-old,” Pearce said. “He’s done well to come back. This horse is as tough as nails and his country feature event wins have been outstanding. Today, he gathered momentum and kept rolling. We plan to keep racing him between 1600m and 2000m.”

Outspoken Lad's Record

Purchased for $60,000 at a Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Outspoken Lad has now won nine races and earned nearly $500,000 from 43 starts. His previous country cup victories this season include the Carnarvon, Esperance, and Narrogin Cups.

Jockey's Tactics

Brad Parnham explained his race strategy, noting that he chose to keep Outspoken Lad in the clear rather than seeking an inside run. “I felt it was best that he be given plenty of room while flowing freely in his rhythm,” Parnham said. “It could have been against him if I hauled into position where we were saving ground.”

Other Highlights

Dual-licensed trainer Casey Hunter celebrated her first city winner when Uni Queen claimed victory in race two. Hunter, based in Albany and active as both a trainer and jockey, booked Holly Watson to ride Uni Queen at Ascot. The mare had previously won in Albany when ridden by Hunter in her last two starts.
