Newcomb Power have recorded their first three-game winning streak in seven years after overcoming an injury-depleted Ammos outfit in a hard-fought contest at Newcomb Park.
Historic Victory for Newcomb
The Power's 15-point win on Saturday was their third consecutive victory, a feat not achieved since 2016. Coach Mark Johnson praised his team's resilience, particularly given the challenging conditions and the opponent's physical style of play.
"It's a massive achievement for the group," Johnson said. "We've been building towards this for a while, and to finally get three in a row is a testament to the hard work the players have put in."
Injury-Hit Ammos Struggle
The Ammos entered the match with a lengthy injury list, missing several key players. Despite this, they put up a strong fight, leading at various stages of the game. However, Newcomb's superior fitness and depth proved decisive in the final quarter.
Ammos coach David Brown acknowledged his team's effort but lamented their inability to capitalise on early opportunities. "We had our chances, but credit to Newcomb - they took their opportunities when it mattered," Brown said.
Key Performances
For Newcomb, midfielder Luke Harrison was outstanding, gathering 28 disposals and kicking two crucial goals. Forward Tom Wilson also impressed with three goals, providing a constant threat up forward.
Defender Jack Thompson was solid in the backline, repelling numerous Ammos attacks. His intercept marking was a highlight, helping to set up several scoring opportunities.
For the Ammos, ruckman Sam Carter battled hard all day, while midfielder Ben Anderson worked tirelessly to keep his team in the contest.
Turning Point
The match turned in the third quarter when Newcomb kicked three unanswered goals to take a 12-point lead into the final break. The Power's midfield dominance and forward pressure proved too much for the Ammos to handle.
"We knew we had to lift in the second half, and the boys responded brilliantly," Johnson added. "The belief in the group is growing with each win."
Looking Ahead
Newcomb will aim to extend their winning streak when they face a tough test against top-four side Belmont next week. Johnson is confident his team can continue their good form.
"We're not getting ahead of ourselves, but we know we can match it with the best teams in the competition," he said.
The Ammos, meanwhile, will look to bounce back and regain some injured players as they prepare for their clash with Ocean Grove.
With the win, Newcomb moves up to sixth on the ladder, keeping their finals hopes alive. The Power's resurgence has been one of the stories of the season, and they will be eager to keep their momentum going.
