Former Fremantle Academy Talent Mitchell Edwards Set for AFL Debut with Geelong
Geelong Cats ruckman Mitchell Edwards is poised to make his long-awaited AFL debut this Saturday in a compelling clash against the Fremantle Dockers, the very club where he once honed his skills as an academy player. This debut marks a significant milestone for the young athlete, who has overcome numerous challenges to reach this point.
Journey from Fremantle Academy to Geelong Selection
Edwards, a product of Peel Thunder, was drafted by Geelong with pick 32 in the 2023 AFL Draft. His path to the top level has been fraught with adversity, as he managed only 10 games in the VFL over the past two seasons due to persistent injury setbacks. These hurdles tested his resilience, but Edwards remained determined to prove his worth on the field.
His ties to Fremantle run deep, having trained with the Dockers throughout 2023 as part of their Next Generation Academy. Interestingly, he came agonisingly close to joining Fremantle; had he been selected just eight picks later in the draft, the Dockers would have had the opportunity to match a bid for him, potentially altering his career trajectory.
Impressive Pre-Season and Team Dynamics
Throughout the pre-season, Edwards showcased his potential with a solid performance in Geelong's stand-alone AAMI Community Series match against Carlton. He gathered 11 disposals, recorded 20 hit-outs, and made an impressive seven tackles, demonstrating his versatility and tenacity on the field.
He enters a Geelong side that is looking to rebound from a 56-point thumping by the Gold Coast Suns in Opening Round. Edwards' debut adds a fresh dynamic to the team, with his teammate Lawson Humphries offering high praise in a recent interview with The West Australian prior to AFL Origin last month.
"He's had a really good pre-season, works really hard, and for the first two years, he's been really disappointed with his injuries," Humphries said. "I think he's done everything in his power to get better off the field, whether that's the mental side of the game, understanding our structures, or hitting the gym. I feel he has gone as hard as anybody. I'm super excited to see him grow as a player, and the confidence he'll get if he can get an opportunity will be really exciting for the club."
Challenging Debut Against Fremantle
Edwards faces a tough task on debut, as he will likely contend with Fremantle's formidable ruck trio of Luke Jackson, Sean Darcy, and Mason Cox, all of whom are expected to feature in the match. However, his prior training with Jackson and Darcy during his time at Fremantle's academy could provide him with valuable insights and a level of familiarity in this high-stakes encounter.
This debut not only highlights Edwards' personal journey of perseverance but also sets the stage for an intriguing narrative in the AFL landscape, as he takes on his former academy club in what promises to be a memorable showdown.
