Lachie Neale Admits He 'Let a Lot of People Down' in Cheating Scandal Fallout
Brisbane Lions star Lachie Neale has publicly addressed his off-season cheating scandal for the first time, admitting he "let a lot of people down" during the drama that resulted in a bitter marriage breakdown. Speaking on Triple M's The Rush Hour, Neale opened up about the intense scrutiny and challenging months that followed the affair with Tess Crosley and his split from wife Jules.
Media Scrutiny and Personal Toll
Neale described the media attention as "over the top", noting that while he understands his role as a footy club captain, the coverage of his personal life took a deep toll on his family. "When it's your personal lives and your private matters, you probably don't think it's newsworthy," he said. He added that the period was "pretty crazy", but he is relieved that football has now taken over the headlines.
Football as Therapy and Captaincy Decision
As Neale prepares for his 300th game this weekend, he revealed that the past few months have "weirdly helped his football", with training serving as a form of therapy. He avoided drinking and focused intensely on his game and being there for his children. Regarding his decision to stand down as Brisbane captain, Neale clarified it was not directly due to the affair but a planned move, with Josh Dunkley and Hugh McCluggage ready to take over leadership roles.
Support from Club and Future Considerations
Neale praised coach Chris Fagan and football manager Danny Daly for their unwavering support, describing Fagan as both a mentor and friend. Looking ahead, Neale acknowledged he might move clubs at the end of 2026 to be closer to his children, stating he will evaluate his life in Brisbane in the coming months. He also expressed confidence in playing until 2029, contingent on his physical and mental readiness.
