West Coast Eagles defender Brady Hough has declared that Jamie Cripps' shock axing from the senior side sends a powerful message that no player is immune from being dropped under new coach Andrew McQualter.
Cripps, a veteran of 232 AFL games, was omitted from the Eagles' lineup for their round one clash against Gold Coast, a decision that raised eyebrows across the competition. The 32-year-old had been a mainstay of the West Coast forward line for over a decade.
Message received loud and clear
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Hough said the decision had reverberated through the playing group, reinforcing the high standards expected under McQualter's reign.
"It shows that no one's spot is safe," Hough said. "Jamie's a champion of the club, but 'Macca' (McQualter) is big on standards and performance. If you're not meeting them, you're going to get dropped, no matter who you are."
The 21-year-old defender, who played 18 games last season, said the message had been drilled into the squad from day one of pre-season. "Everyone's competing for their spot every week. You can't rest on your laurels. You've got to earn your place in the team," he added.
Cripps' omission a selection shock
Cripps' absence from the round one team came as a surprise given his experience and leadership. The small forward has been a key contributor since crossing from St Kilda at the end of 2013, kicking 275 goals in his Eagles career. However, McQualter opted for a younger forward line, including the likes of Jack Darling, Oscar Allen, and emerging talents.
Hough acknowledged that the decision had sparked extra intensity at training. "It's definitely lifted the intensity. Everyone knows they have to bring their best every session, every game. There's no room for complacency," he said.
New coach, new standards
McQualter, who took over from Adam Simpson in the off-season, has emphasised accountability and a ruthless selection policy. The Eagles are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2024 campaign that saw them finish 16th on the ladder.
Hough, who is entering his third AFL season, said the group had embraced the new approach. "We all want to be part of a successful team, and that starts with everyone doing their job and holding each other accountable. 'Macca' has been really clear about what he expects, and we're all buying in."
The Eagles will face Gold Coast at People First Stadium on Saturday night, with Hough expected to play a key role in defence against a Suns forward line featuring Ben King and Levi Casboult. A win would provide an early boost for McQualter's tenure and validate the tough selection calls made in round one.
