Gold Coast Coach Hardwick Warns Suns Not to Underestimate West Coast Eagles
Hardwick Warns Suns Not to Underestimate West Coast Eagles

Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick has issued a stern warning to his players, urging them not to underestimate the challenge posed by the West Coast Eagles in their upcoming AFL match. Despite the Eagles being labeled as the biggest Round 1 outsiders in over a decade, with odds stacked against them at $16, Hardwick emphasized that the Suns must be fully prepared for a tough battle.

Hardwick's Caution Against Complacency

In a recent statement, Hardwick highlighted that while many are dismissing West Coast's chances, the Eagles have a strong system in place under coach Andrew McQualter. He pointed out that in the AAMI Community Series against Port Adelaide, the Eagles performed well in all key performance indicators except the scoreboard, indicating their potential to disrupt games.

"Everyone will look at the odds, but what I do know is that Andrew McQualter has got a great system in place," Hardwick said. "Their system is very, very strong. We went through that with our playing group this morning and understand we've got to play our game to a high level, otherwise we're going to get a disappointing result."

Youth and Talent in West Coast's Lineup

The West Coast Eagles boast the youngest and least experienced side in the AFL this season, with four debutants set to take the field this weekend. However, Hardwick cautioned against underestimating these young players, noting their raw talent and high draft picks as reasons for their capability.

"People will look at the youth but they're very good young players. There's a reason they got picked high in the draft, they can play the game," he explained. "There's a challenge there and we've got to make sure we're up for it."

Injury and Suspension Woes for Eagles

Compounding West Coast's challenges, they will be without several key defenders due to suspension or injury, including Brandon Starcevich, Liam Baker, and Harry Edwards. This could create opportunities for Gold Coast's forwards, such as Ben King, who scored six goals in their last encounter and remains a significant threat.

Despite this, Hardwick indicated that the Suns are unlikely to make major changes to their lineup, which recently delivered a dominant performance against Geelong in Opening Round. Jed Walter, although included in the extended squad, is not expected to feature prominently in this match.

Managing Player Fitness and Long-Term Strategy

In related news, Hardwick addressed the situation with former No. 1 pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, who has not played since his high-profile move in the off-season. Hardwick stated that Ugle-Hagan was disappointed about being overlooked for the first two games but emphasized the importance of ensuring his match fitness before reintroducing him to AFL action.

"It's more match fitness. He has missed a lot of footy," Hardwick said. "He wants to play and is keen to play and we're keen to play him as well. As I said last week, we want to set him up for success. We've got to make sure when he's ready to go, he's ready to play out the full year. I see this guy as a long-term player for us."

This approach underscores Hardwick's focus on long-term player development and team success, rather than rushing key assets back into the fray prematurely. As the Suns prepare for their clash with the Eagles, the coach's warnings serve as a reminder that in AFL, underestimating any opponent can lead to unexpected outcomes.
