Fremantle Dockers Secure Leon Kickett in Rookie Draft Surprise
Fremantle Dockers draft Leon Kickett in rookie selection

The Fremantle Dockers have completed their 2025 draft campaign with an exciting late selection, securing Swan Districts forward Leon Kickett through the rookie draft process.

From South Bunbury to Cockburn

Leon Kickett, the 19-year-old livewire forward from South Bunbury, emerged as one of Western Australia's surprise draft bolters this season. Despite strong expectations he might be recruited during the national draft, the young talent had to wait until Friday, November 21, 2025, to hear his name called by Fremantle.

The Dockers ultimately landed Kickett on their rookie list, providing the promising forward with his AFL opportunity after he impressed scouts throughout the season.

Rising Through the Ranks

Kickett's journey to the AFL began gaining serious momentum following an outstanding colts season with Swan Districts. His performance throughout the year turned heads, particularly his four-goal effort during Swan Districts' finals loss to West Perth.

The rising star also earned his league debut late in the season, making an immediate impact by kicking two goals in their round 20 clash against Peel Thunder. Kickett finished his brief senior stint with three goals across just two games, demonstrating his potential at the higher level.

Fremantle's Evolving List Strategy

Kickett's arrival at Cockburn coincides with Fremantle's acquisition of former Collingwood ruckman Mason Cox, who will join the club on Monday through the pre-season supplemental selection period.

The Dockers have maintained strategic flexibility by leaving one additional rookie spot open on their list. This position will be held for train-on players throughout the summer, allowing the club to assess potential talent during the pre-season period before making their final list decisions.

Fremantle's approach to the rookie draft reflects their commitment to developing Western Australian talent while balancing experienced acquisitions like Cox to strengthen their overall squad structure for the upcoming season.
