West Coast Eagles Co-Captain Reuben Ginbey Details AFL Fitness and Surfing Life

West Coast Eagles co-captain Reuben Ginbey has openly discussed the meticulous preparation behind his AFL-ready physique and his distinctive blonde hair, while also sharing insights into his surfing lifestyle with teammates. In a recent interview on Triple M Breakfast with Xav & Katie, the 21-year-old defender revealed the dual focus on athleticism and personal grooming that defines his approach to professional football.

Fitness Philosophy and Physical Development

When asked about maintaining peak physical condition year-round, Ginbey credited a combination of natural athleticism and dedicated training. "A bit of natural athleticism always comes a long way, but I guess it is our job to stay fit and lift weights. If that’s your job, it’s not too hard to stay fit," he explained. Co-host Katie Lamb humorously noted his impressive back muscles, suggesting they resemble abs, highlighting the results of his rigorous fitness regime.

Ginbey, who grew up as a Dockers supporter in the coastal town of Dunsborough, emphasized that his upbringing near the beach has influenced both his physique and his iconic curly blonde hair. When questioned about his grooming habits, he admitted room for improvement, particularly regarding his hair. "Nothing for the skin and that, the hair needs a bit of work—I don’t know what we’re rocking with this year. It’s a bit average at the moment," Ginbey said, attributing his natural look to "just a bit of salt and sand" from his surfing lifestyle.

Surfing Adventures and Team Camaraderie

Taking up surfing at age 10, Ginbey has long enjoyed the South West swell, though he modestly ranks himself among the less skilled surfers in his club. "There’s probably five of us, I’m probably the worst. So Hutchy’s (Jack Hutchinson) real good, Clay Hall’s not bad, Jacob Newton—we call him the Pig Dog—he’s pretty good too," he shared, showcasing the friendly competition and camaraderie among Eagles players off the field.

Ideally, Ginbey would have embarked on an international surf trip during the off-season, but plans were disrupted by a knee injury sustained in August from a collision with teammate Matt Flynn. "Last year I didn’t get to go away, cos’ I smashed my knee into the back of Flynny’s head at the end of the year so that kind of stuffed that up," he recounted. Despite this setback, he managed to spend quality time in Dunsborough, reflecting on past trips to destinations like Sri Lanka, Bali, and Indonesia, and noting the team's fondness for European adventures.

Looking Ahead to the AFL Season

As the AFL season kicks off, Ginbey and the West Coast Eagles are set to face the Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium on Sunday. This match presents a significant challenge, with the Suns in strong form, but Ginbey's focus on fitness and team dynamics will be crucial. His blend of disciplined training, coastal lifestyle, and lighthearted approach to grooming underscores the multifaceted life of a modern AFL athlete, balancing professional demands with personal passions.

Through his candid revelations, Ginbey offers fans a glimpse into the dedication required to excel in the AFL, while maintaining a connection to his roots and enjoying the simple pleasures of surfing and community with teammates.
