West Coast Eagles coach Andrew McQualter has publicly endorsed new signing Milan Murdock, predicting the mature-age recruit will make an immediate and substantial impact on the team during the upcoming AFL season. Murdock, a 25-year-old midfielder, joined the Eagles last month through the pre-season supplemental selection period, following a season-ending knee injury to small forward Noah Long.
From WAFL Star to AFL Opportunity
Murdock's journey to the AFL list is a testament to years of dedication and performance. A three-time Simpson medallist and East Fremantle premiership star, he had attracted attention from multiple AFL clubs in recent seasons. "Milan is 25 years old, so he's a bit more experienced in life and he's been brilliant since he walked into the door," McQualter stated in an interview with The West Sport Show. "He's a bundle of energy. He's pro, you can see that about the way he prepares himself and the way he thinks about his football. He's going to have a huge impact on our group."

The Eagles' decision to sign Murdock aligns with their broader strategy of identifying and developing talent from diverse pathways. McQualter emphasized that the club would not have recruited Murdock if they did not believe he could contribute as an AFL footballer this year and in the future. "We wouldn't have taken him if we didn't think he was a chance of being an AFL footballer this year and for the future as well," he explained.
Murdock himself is eager to seize this opportunity, expressing determination to earn a spot in the best 23 for the Eagles' season opener against Gold Coast. "Even though I didn't get a full pre-season at West Coast, I am almost as fit as what I've ever been and as fit as I will get. I couldn't be more ready to go," he told The West Australian.

Murdock's signing follows the Eagles' recent success with mature-age recruits, such as Tom McCarthy, who was plucked from obscurity last year and quickly became a standout player. McCarthy set a club record with 31 disposals on his debut and is now poised to join a revamped midfield at West Coast after an impressive pre-season.
McQualter underscored the importance of continuing to scout for hidden gems across the country to bolster the team's rebuilding efforts. "We've seen over the last five or six years now there's been some serious players taken in the mid-season draft," he noted. "All 18-year-olds want to get taken at the end of November, and that's understandable, but there's so many different avenues now to become an AFL footballer."
