Magpies Secure Promising WA Talent
In a strategic move during the 2025 AFL Draft, the Collingwood Magpies have selected West Perth midfielder Sam Swadling with the first pick of the third round, pick number 37. This selection on Thursday, November 20, ensures Western Australia has immediate representation in the draft's third round, following a quiet second round for WA prospects.
WA's Draft Hopefuls Find Their Homes
The draft saw Jacob Farrow as the sole West Australian chosen in the first round, selected by Essendon at pick 10 on Wednesday. Swadling, a close friend and former teammate of Farrow from their time at the West Perth Falcons, became the second WA player to have his name called. The two were the first WA players selected in this year's draft, highlighting the strength of the Falcons' development program.
Swadling's Impressive Pedigree
Swadling arrives at the AIA Centre with a formidable reputation as a hugely prolific midfielder. His ball-winning ability is beyond question, having averaged a remarkable 35 disposals per game at WAFL colts level. He also demonstrated he could compete against senior competition, notching more than 20 disposals in two of his three appearances at WAFL league level.
He will join a growing contingent of Sandgropers at the Holden Centre, including reigning best and fairest winner Darcy Cameron, recent recruit Jack Buller, and emerging talents Ed Allan and Will Hayes. Swadling's selection also continues a strong West Perth connection at Collingwood, where he will reunite with Roan Steele, who was taken in last year's mid-season draft.
