Carlton Officially Signs Elijah Hollands Ahead of New Season
Carlton Football Club has given young gun Elijah Hollands another opportunity, officially signing the talented player on the eve of the new AFL season. This move comes after Hollands was delisted last October, despite having another year remaining on his contract, following a difficult season marred by off-field issues.
Second Chance After Summer Training
The 23-year-old was granted a chance to continue his AFL career by training with Carlton over the summer. His efforts paid off, as he secured a spot on the club's list as a pre-season supplemental signing. Reports indicate that Hollands had a faultless summer, impressing the coaching staff and earning this second chance.
Background and Challenges
Hollands was traded to Carlton from Gold Coast at the end of 2023. However, his time with the Blues has been challenging, playing only 27 games over two seasons, including just five in the most recent year. Coach Michael Voss described the situation as "disappointing" for the club, citing off-field struggles that led to two stints away from the game on personal leave.
Summer Success and Team Additions
Alongside Hollands, former GWS big man Wade Derksen also won a list spot after impressing over the summer. Derksen, 24, never played a game at the Giants after joining via the 2022 mid-season draft. This dual signing strengthens Carlton's roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Personal Journey and Future Outlook
Originally drafted to Gold Coast with pick No. 7, Hollands played 14 games in two seasons before joining his younger brother Ollie at Carlton ahead of the 2024 season. He made an immediate impact, playing 22 games in 2024 to cement his place in the team. Despite setbacks in 2025, including taking leave and playing only a few games, Hollands returned to play VFL footy and expressed optimism about his future, stating, "(2025) has had a couple more downs than ups so far, however there's been lots to learn and I'm very excited for the next chapter."
Family Connection and Team Dynamics
This decision means Hollands will continue to play alongside his younger brother Ollie, who has been an outstanding young player for Carlton since being drafted with pick No. 11 in 2022. Ollie has played 65 games for the club, rarely missing since his debut in Round 1 of 2023, adding a positive dynamic to the team.
