Fremantle spearhead Aine Tighe has been ruled out for the entire 2026 AFLW season, with the club confirming she has been placed on the inactive list. The decision comes as the Irish forward continues her recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained in October last year.
Club confirms inactive list placement
Fremantle women’s footy boss Claire Heffernan announced the move on Wednesday, stating it followed ongoing discussions with Tighe and her management. Tighe was already expected to miss most of the club’s 2026 campaign, but the decision now ensures she will not play at all this season.
“After ongoing consultation with Aine and her management, the decision has been made to place Tighe on the inactive list for 2026,” Heffernan said. “Aine has been incredibly diligent in her rehab, but given the complexities surrounding her knee injury, this decision gives her the best opportunity to prioritise her long-term health.”
The move opens up a list spot for the Dockers ahead of the AFLW pre-season draft, scheduled for Monday.
Injury setback after return
The luckless forward hurt her right knee in round nine of the 2024 season, in her first game back since injuring the same knee in 2024. Tighe had only just returned to the field when she suffered the setback, which has now sidelined her for an extended period.
Despite being unable to play in 2026, Heffernan emphasised that Tighe will remain an important part of the club off the field. “While she won’t be stepping on field in 2026, it’s very important to both Aine and the program that she stays connected to the playing group,” she said.
“Aine is a natural leader who is deeply respected by her teammates and staff members. Her football IQ, professionalism and coaching experience as the Female NGA and Game Development Coach make her an invaluable asset to the club and our program.”
Contract extends to 2027
Tighe remains contracted with the Dockers until the end of the 2027 AFLW season, indicating the club’s long-term commitment to her recovery and future contributions. The 2026 season will be a recovery year, with hopes she can return to full fitness for the following campaign.
