AFL to Keep Friday Night Double Headers Despite Fan Backlash
AFL to Keep Friday Night Double Headers Despite Backlash

The AFL will continue with contentious Friday night double headers when the next section of the fixture is announced this week, despite widespread fan criticism. League chief executive Andrew Dillon confirmed on Monday that time slots for rounds 16 to 22 will be released, with only matchups currently known.

Flexibility and Ratings Drive Decision

Dillon defended the double-header format, noting that crowds have been healthy and television numbers strong. “When you look at the free-to-air across the country, with different games being shown in different states ... we’ve had more people watching,” he said. “There will be a couple more of those double-headers.”

Another benefit, according to Dillon, is that the extra Friday night game gives the AFL’s fixturing team more flexibility to manage breaks between games, particularly five- and six-day turnarounds.

Fan Backlash Continues

However, many fans remain unhappy. One fan said, “This has been the worst year ever. I am actively watching less football than I want to because of these double-ups.” Another added, “Who asked for double headers on a Friday night? Bad decision after bad decision by the AFL.”

“Sounds about right. Do exactly the opposite of what the public want,” another fan commented. “Why continue with this ridiculous double headers on a Friday night? Clearly Dillon needs to read the room!” Others expressed frustration at not being able to watch both games live.

Thursday Nights and Top Teams

Dillon noted that Thursday night games have been the highest-rating, and the next block of fixtures will feature a spread of teams. Sydney and Fremantle, currently top of the ladder, are expected to feature prominently in prime-time slots. “There will be a good spread of Victorian and non-Victorian teams in those prime-time Thursday and Friday night slots,” he said.

The round 23 and 24 fixtures will be confirmed closer to August, allowing the league to maximise exposure for the best games.
