New Agriculture Secretary Announced After Shock Exit

Return to Roots: Anderson Takes Top Agriculture Role

The Australian government has confirmed Victoria Anderson as the new secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, marking a significant appointment following the unexpected departure of her predecessor. Anderson will commence her five-year term on December 8, 2025, bringing substantial public policy expertise back to her professional origins.

From Treasury to Agriculture: A Career Comes Full Circle

Ms Anderson's most recent position was deputy secretary of the small business, corporate and law group at the Department of the Treasury. Her appointment represents a homecoming, as she began her public service career as a graduate within the Agriculture department during the early 2000s. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese endorsed the selection, highlighting Anderson's comprehensive understanding of agricultural challenges.

'Ms Anderson brings a depth of expertise in public policy to the role, particularly in the agriculture domain where she commenced as a graduate,' the Prime Minister stated in his Thursday announcement. 'Her experience spans industry and drought policy, agricultural market access, biosecurity policy and corporate governance.'

Following Unexpected Departure and Scrutinised Payout

The leadership change follows the surprise termination of Adam Fennessy in September, merely two years into his five-year appointment. October Senate estimates revealed Fennessy received a full year's salary compensation totaling $899,620, a substantial payout that attracted significant scrutiny from opposition senators.

Justine Saunders, who temporarily filled the secretary position following Fennessy's departure, received acknowledgment from the Prime Minister for her interim leadership. During Senate estimates, Saunders declined to elaborate on the circumstances surrounding Fennessy's termination, describing it as a matter between the government and the former secretary.

Beyond her agricultural background, Anderson's portfolio includes coordinating the Albanese government's 2022 jobs and skills summit and collaborating with states and territories on COVID-19 management in educational settings. Her diverse experience positions her to address the complex challenges facing Australia's agricultural sector, from biosecurity threats to market access negotiations.
