A 30-year-old Midvale man has been charged with arson after allegedly setting fire to a home while a mother and her three children were asleep inside.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning at a property on Midvale Road. Police allege the man deliberately lit a fire that caused significant damage to the home.
The mother and her three children, aged 6, 4, and 2, were asleep at the time but managed to escape unharmed after being alerted by smoke alarms. They were treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.
The accused man, who is known to the family, was arrested a short distance from the property and has been charged with one count of arson causing damage. He appeared in the Midland Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon and was refused bail.
Police have stated that the fire was not random and that the family is being supported by victim support services. The investigation is ongoing.
