Residents of Grovedale, a suburb in Geelong, are living in fear after a group of teenagers allegedly embarked on a crime spree that has left the community shaken. The series of incidents, which occurred over the past week, has prompted calls for increased police presence and community safety measures.
Wave of Crime Hits Grovedale
The alleged spree began on Monday night when a home on Torquay Road was broken into while the occupants were asleep. The intruders stole cash, jewellery, and a car. The following night, a convenience store on Heyers Road was ram-raided, with the offenders making off with cigarettes and alcohol. On Wednesday, a service station on Surf Coast Highway was targeted, and a nearby resident reported an attempted car theft.
Local resident Sarah Thompson said the community is on edge. 'We are terrified. This is a quiet neighbourhood, and we never expected something like this to happen. We are now locking our doors and windows, even during the day.'
Police Investigation Underway
Victoria Police have confirmed they are investigating the incidents and believe they are linked. A spokesperson said detectives are reviewing CCTV footage and appealing for witnesses. 'We understand the community's concerns and are working diligently to identify and apprehend those responsible,' the spokesperson said.
Police have increased patrols in the area, but residents say it is not enough. 'We need more police on the ground, especially at night,' said John Miller, a Grovedale father of two. 'These kids are brazen, and they seem to have no fear of being caught.'
Community Calls for Action
The crime spree has sparked a community meeting, where residents voiced their anger and fear. Many called for better lighting, more CCTV cameras, and a stronger police presence. Some suggested forming a neighbourhood watch program.
Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher said the council is working with police to address the issue. 'We take community safety very seriously. We are exploring all options to ensure Grovedale remains a safe place to live.'
Local MP Christine Couzens said she has raised the matter in parliament. 'This is unacceptable. Our community deserves to feel safe in their own homes. I am calling for a targeted police operation to stop this spree.'
The alleged offenders are described as teenagers, possibly aged between 14 and 17. They are believed to be travelling in a stolen white Holden Commodore with registration ABC123. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police immediately. The community's unity and determination to restore safety are evident, but the fear lingers as the search for the suspects continues.
