Dapto Teenager Arrested for Allegedly Impersonating Police and Pulling Over Drivers
An 18-year-old man from Dapto has been charged with impersonating a police officer after allegedly using red and blue flashing lights to pull over drivers in Wollongong and Shellharbour late at night. The incidents occurred last month, leading to his arrest by Lake Illawarra Police.
Details of the Alleged Incidents
The first incident took place around 10:30 PM on Wednesday, January 14, on the Primbee Bypass at Primbee. The man, driving a Mitsubishi vehicle, allegedly used flashing lights to stop an 18-year-old female driver. Wearing plain clothes, he asked for her licence and took her phone back to his car, claiming he would issue a warning for speeding. Suspicious of his behaviour, the woman left the scene and reported the event to police at the Lake Illawarra station.
Approximately half an hour later, the same man allegedly used the flashing lights again to pull over a 21-year-old male driver on Cove Blvd in Shell Cove. This driver was not deceived when the man demanded his licence and registration; instead, he drove away and immediately called Triple Zero to alert authorities.
Investigation and Arrest
Following these reports, Lake Illawarra Police launched an investigation. On Thursday, February 12, officers arrested the 18-year-old man at a residence on Shiraz Dr in Dapto. He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and formally charged with two counts of impersonating a police officer and exercising their powers or functions.
The man has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday, March 18. Police have not yet disclosed the motivations behind his actions, but his young age may have been a factor in the failed impersonation attempts.
This case highlights the importance of public vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities to law enforcement. Authorities are urging drivers to verify the identity of anyone attempting to pull them over, especially in unusual circumstances.
