A 38-year-old man has been charged with murder following a violent incident at the Swanston Centre, a mental health facility in Geelong, that resulted in the death of a fellow patient.

Details of the Incident

Police allege that the accused assaulted a 44-year-old man at the facility on Wednesday afternoon. The victim was rushed to University Hospital Geelong with life-threatening injuries but died on Thursday morning.

The accused, who was also a patient at the centre, was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder. He appeared before the Geelong Magistrates' Court on Thursday, where he was remanded in custody.

Investigation Underway

Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack. The Swanston Centre, operated by Barwon Health, provides acute mental health services. The facility has been cooperating with authorities.

Barwon Health released a statement expressing condolences to the victim's family and confirming their support for the police investigation. Staff and patients have been offered counseling services.

The accused is scheduled to reappear in court in November. Police continue to appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
