Statewide Shortage of Dog Poo Bags Sparks Concerns in Western Australia
A surprising shortage is affecting communities across Western Australia, as councils report a critical lack of dog poo bags. This issue has emerged amid broader supply chain disruptions, including shortages in fuel and fertiliser linked to conflicts in the Middle East.
Global Shipping Delays Blamed for Supply Issues
The City of Kalamunda has publicly addressed the problem, attributing the shortage to global shipping delays. In a recent social media post, the council explained, "We've had a few ruff enquiries about empty dog poo bag dispensers around the City, so here's the scoop." They confirmed that this shortage is not isolated, affecting multiple regions across WA.
Earlier this year, the City placed a substantial order for approximately three million bags, scheduled to arrive in March. However, the shipment is now delayed and is not expected to reach Fremantle for at least another three weeks.
Efforts to Mitigate the Shortage
In response, the council has been actively seeking solutions. They have been "chasing its tail" by attempting to source bags from other councils, exploring alternative suppliers, and placing interim orders where possible. Despite these efforts, the post stated, "Unfortunately, there's a wider shortage and we've now run out of stock."
To keep residents informed, notices will be displayed on dispensers to alert dog owners about the situation.
Advice for Dog Owners
With the shortage ongoing, dog owners are strongly encouraged to bring their own waste collection bags when taking their pets for walks. This proactive measure can help maintain cleanliness in public spaces while councils work to resolve the supply issues.
The shortage highlights how global events can impact local services, even in seemingly minor areas like pet waste management. Residents are advised to stay updated through official council channels for further developments.
