The Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA (CCIWA) has announced a significant leadership change, appointing a senior executive from the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) to steer the state's premier business advocacy organisation.
A New Leader for Western Australia's Business Voice
Chris Rodwell, currently the Group Executive for Member Experience and Brand at RAC, will take the helm as CCIWA's Chief Executive Officer. His appointment follows an extensive national search to replace the outgoing CEO, Chris O'Halloran, who is departing after a five-year tenure. Rodwell is scheduled to commence his new role on Monday, 24 February 2025.
The decision was confirmed by CCIWA's board, with President Natalie McGrath expressing strong confidence in the selection. McGrath highlighted Rodwell's deep understanding of the issues facing Western Australian businesses and his proven track record in advocacy and leadership within a major member-based organisation.
Background and Strategic Vision
Chris Rodwell brings a wealth of experience to the position. Before his executive role at RAC, he served as the organisation's General Manager of Public Policy and Advocacy. His career also includes a notable stint as the State Political Editor for The West Australian newspaper, providing him with insider knowledge of the political landscape.
In his previous capacity at RAC, Rodwell was responsible for overseeing a substantial portfolio, including advocacy, communications, and brand strategy for an organisation with over one million members. This background in representing member interests on critical issues like cost of living and infrastructure is seen as directly transferable to the challenges faced by CCIWA's diverse membership.
Upon his appointment, Rodwell stated his commitment to being a strong and effective voice for businesses across the state. He emphasised his focus on tackling pressing concerns such as workforce shortages, regulatory burdens, and energy costs, which are pivotal for the competitiveness and growth of Western Australian enterprises.
Transition and Future Directions for CCIWA
The outgoing CEO, Chris O'Halloran, led CCIWA through a period of significant challenge and change, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The board acknowledged his substantial contributions in navigating the organisation and its members through that difficult era.
The leadership transition comes at a crucial time for the WA business lobby. The state's economy continues to grapple with skills gaps, housing affordability impacting workforce mobility, and the transition towards renewable energy. CCIWA, under its new CEO, is expected to intensify its advocacy on these fronts with both the state government in Perth and federal counterparts.
Natalie McGrath made it clear that the board's unanimous choice of Rodwell was strategic. They sought a leader who could not only advocate powerfully but also drive the organisation's own evolution to better serve its members in a rapidly changing economic environment.
The business community in Perth and across Western Australia will be watching closely as Chris Rodwell prepares to step into one of the most influential business roles in the state, tasked with shaping policy and championing the interests of thousands of businesses.
