Operation Morpheus: WA Comancheros Arrested in National Bikie Blitz

Police have issued a stern warning to outlaw motorcycle gangs, declaring they are in for a "world of hurt" following the arrest of five individuals in Western Australia as part of a National Day of Action targeting the Comanchero gang. This coordinated blitz, led by WA Police, resulted in 56 arrests across Australia and New Zealand, with 168 offences charged.

Massive Disruption to Organised Crime

During the operation, officers executed 51 search warrants nationally, leading to 47 firearm prohibition order compliance checks and five visa cancellations. A significant cache of illicit drugs, firearms, and cash was seized, highlighting the scale of the crackdown. Detective Acting Inspector Sean Wright emphasised that this was a huge disruption and that similar operations would continue unabated.

"Anyone who is associated and committing offences with outlaw motorcycle gang members are being targeted," he stated. "Next week, it could be you. Every day, we'll be targeting gangs without question."

Taskforce Morpheus in Action

Taskforce Morpheus, a cross-jurisdictional initiative involving all Australian state and territory police, New Zealand Police, and agencies like the Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force, spearheaded the efforts. Vision released by WA Police shows dramatic footage of armed officers executing search warrants, including smashing down doors and apprehending suspects.

In WA alone, five people were charged with 14 offences related to drugs, firearms, cash, and motor vehicles. Detective Acting Inspector Wright noted that the Comancheros were specifically targeted due to their recent criminal activities, serving as a warning to other gangs.

Links to Broader Criminal Networks

The operation comes amid ongoing investigations into the Comancheros' connections to broader organised crime. Recently, WA Police revealed a significant link between the gang and alleged tobacco kingpin Kazem Hamad, who is under investigation for firebombings and violent attacks tied to the illicit tobacco trade.

Additionally, recent court cases have exposed violent incidents involving gang members, such as threats to firebomb a tobacco store and the brutal assault of a former sergeant-at-arms, Leslie "Lethal Les" Grantham, who was shot and burned after attempting to leave the gang.

Commitment to Ongoing Enforcement

Queensland Detective Acting Inspector and Taskforce Morpheus acting national chair Craig Bowman affirmed police dedication to disrupting organised crime. "The volatile and often divisive nature of OMCGs such as the Comancheros creates opportunities for law enforcement agencies to exploit," he explained. "These vulnerabilities allow us to target their networks more effectively."

Authorities urge the public to avoid involvement with outlaw motorcycle gangs, reinforcing that such associations lead to severe legal consequences. The National Day of Action underscores a relentless approach to dismantling criminal enterprises across borders.
