Teen Driver Charged in Fatal Stolen Car Incident in Melbourne's West

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with culpable driving causing death following a horrific stolen car crash in Melbourne's western suburbs that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old passenger. The tragic incident unfolded just after midnight on Friday in Hoppers Crossing, leaving a community in shock and a family devastated.

Chaotic Pursuit and High-Speed Crash

Police allege the teenage boy was driving a stolen grey Skoda sedan with six other teenagers aged between 14 and 16 as passengers. According to investigators, the group had initially attempted to carjack a Toyota sedan before chasing it in the stolen Skoda. During this pursuit along Derrimut Road in Hoppers Crossing, police claim the Skoda was travelling at speeds reaching up to 180km/h before it crashed into the Toyota.

The collision triggered a series of further impacts. The Skoda then allegedly smashed into a Ford sedan and a Ford Ranger before rolling over and coming to rest in the front yard of a nearby residential property. The force of the crash was so severe that it ejected a 15-year-old boy from the Wyndham area from the vehicle, leading to his tragic death at the scene.

Aftermath and Arrests

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, four teenagers allegedly fled the scene as the 15-year-old victim lay dying. Police arrested the 17-year-old driver from the Wyndham area on Saturday. He has since been charged with culpable driving causing death and other driving offences. The accused teenager was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before a children's court.

A 16-year-old girl from the Wyndham area sustained serious injuries in the crash and remains hospitalized. Another 16-year-old girl from the same area was arrested at the scene, interviewed by police, and released pending further investigation. Additionally, a 14-year-old boy from the Wyndham area presented himself at a nearby hospital after the incident, where he was arrested on matters unrelated to the crash.

Police Investigation and Evidence

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. Police allege the Skoda was stolen from Yellow Box Street in Maidstone sometime between Wednesday and Thursday prior to the crash. Inside the vehicle, investigators discovered a sword and alcohol, adding concerning elements to the case.

Police are still working to identify the four occupants of the Skoda who fled the scene after the crash. The family of the deceased 15-year-old visited the crash site on Friday, expressing their devastation and struggle to comprehend the tragedy that has taken their loved one.

Investigations remain ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with further information to contact Crime Stoppers to assist with the case.
