Sydney Overnight Violence: Two Men Shot, Two Police Officers Injured in Separate Incidents
Two men are currently in hospital with gunshot wounds, and two police officers have sustained injuries in a series of violent events that unfolded across Sydney overnight. The incidents, which occurred in separate locations, have left one man in critical condition and prompted a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shootings and assaults.
First Incident: Riverwood Shooting and Police Injury
The initial violent episode took place in Riverwood, a suburb in Sydney's southwest, at approximately 8:30 PM on Wednesday. According to police reports, Riot Squad officers were conducting patrols on Juno Parade when a 39-year-old officer approached a Toyota CHR that was stopped at an intersection. The vehicle then accelerated suddenly, pinning the officer between two cars.
In response, the officer fired a single shot into the Toyota as it fled the scene. The officer was treated by paramedics for lower leg injuries at the location, while his colleagues launched a search for the vehicle, which is believed to have been stolen from Riverwood. Shortly after, at around 9:15 PM, the Toyota was located nearby.
A 32-year-old man was discovered with a gunshot wound on Squires Street in Ryde, approximately 13 kilometers to the north of the initial incident. He was transported to hospital in stable condition and remains under police guard, with authorities investigating his connection to the events in Riverwood.
Second Incident: Chester Hill Shooting and Police Assault
Several hours later, at about 11:30 PM, police were alerted to reports of multiple gunshots fired on Campbell Hill Road in Chester Hill, located about 9 kilometers west of the earlier Riverwood incident. Soon after, a 26-year-old man who had been shot multiple times was admitted to Auburn Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Police believe that occupants of a black utility vehicle fired several shots towards the occupants of a Mercedes, which was later found abandoned in the hospital carpark. As officers attempted to question a 30-year-old man at the emergency department of the hospital, he allegedly assaulted a 58-year-old chief inspector by repeatedly punching him in the head.
The chief inspector sustained a laceration to his head and received medical treatment for his injuries. The 30-year-old man was subsequently arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer. He is expected to appear before Burwood Local Court on Thursday to face these charges.
Ongoing Investigations and Public Appeal
Both police officers involved in these separate incidents have been treated for their injuries and are recovering. Meanwhile, the two wounded men remain hospitalized, with one in critical condition following the Chester Hill shooting.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to either incident, including dashcam or CCTV footage, to contact Crime Stoppers immediately. The investigations into the shootings and assaults are ongoing, as police work to determine the full details and any potential links between the events.
These violent occurrences highlight ongoing concerns about public safety in Sydney, with law enforcement agencies continuing to patrol and respond to such incidents across the city.
