Perth Bookstores Unite for Global Book Crawl Celebration
Local bookstores across Perth are opening their doors and dusting off their shelves to host the Perth leg of the 2026 Global Book Crawl, a vibrant event designed to encourage readers to support their neighborhood literary hubs. For one week only, bookshops spanning the western suburbs, Fremantle, and the Perth CBD have joined forces to create a bookshop crawl that celebrates the joy of reading and community connection.
National and Global Participation
This initiative is part of a larger movement, with twelve synchronized crawls taking place in 160 bookshops across Australia. This marks the second time the Global Book Crawl has come to Australia and the first time it has spread over the entire country, highlighting a growing appreciation for independent bookstores. Perth coordinator Jane Seaton emphasized the significance of this event, noting that the Perth community has a substantial reader base that values its local stores.
"It's embracing what a bookstore in the community actually does - it's such a fantastic meeting place for people, it's a hub of knowledge," Seaton said. "We know the Perth community loves its bookstores. We have more bookstores per capita than any other State in Australia, and that's only because our communities want that, that they're surviving. We're anticipating it's going to be a very busy week."
Event Details and Incentives
Participants in the Perth crawl can collect a passport to be stamped at each shop they visit, with eight stamps earning them a free audiobook of choice from Libro.fm. Passports are available at any participating stores, including notable locations such as New Edition or Paper Bird Books in Fremantle, Paperhouse Books in Applecross, Lane Bookshop in Claremont, and Pigface Bookstore in Perth. For those who visit all 16 bookshops, there is an opportunity to enter a draw to win an $800 book voucher, a unique initiative that sets the Perth crawl apart from others in the country.
"It's quite a collegial thing with the 16 bookstores in Perth that are participating," Seaton added, highlighting the collaborative spirit among local businesses.
Family-Friendly Activities and Economic Impact
Families crawling together can also visit five stores to receive a free copy of Andy Griffiths' Land of Lost Things, while supplies last. Seaton, who also owns Beaufort Street Books in Mount Lawley, reported that local stores are already benefiting from the event, with an uptick in sales and increased foot traffic.
"We've already seen an uptake in sales, but it's more about getting people through the door, because they don't have to make a purchase," she explained. "It's more about going in and experiencing these wonderful locations throughout WA. In WA, we are punching well above our weight in terms of overall sales in bookstores compared with the Eastern States. We've had new independent stores opening in the past 12 months."
Global Reach and Event Duration
The Global Book Crawl is a worldwide phenomenon, with 73 cities across Europe, Asia, America, and Oceania taking part. The event runs until Sunday, April 26, offering a limited-time opportunity for book lovers to engage with their local literary scenes and support independent retailers. This initiative not only fosters community engagement but also underscores the vital role bookstores play as cultural and social hubs in neighborhoods across Perth and beyond.
