Three protesters were forcibly removed from a resources sector breakfast in Perth this morning, just as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was preparing to address the gathering. The incident occurred at the Chamber of Minerals and Energy Western Australia event, held at The Westin Hotel.
Disruption at the Event
The protesters stormed the stage, shouting slogans and displaying banners reading "Disrupt Burrup hub," which were quickly torn down by event staff. Security personnel intervened, escorting the individuals out of the venue. Among the protesters were a person wearing a green anorak and another in a black hoodie. Music was turned up in an attempt to drown out the commotion.
Prominent Attendees
The breakfast was attended by several high-profile figures, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Western Australian Premier Roger Cook, and Woodside CEO Liz Westcott. The event was organized by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA, a key industry body.
Prime Minister's Announcements
During his address, Mr. Albanese is expected to announce a $1.1 billion funding package for road infrastructure to support the Westport development. Additionally, he will outline plans to provide state governments with funds to expedite agreements that streamline environmental approval processes.
The disruption highlights ongoing tensions around resource development projects in Western Australia, particularly the Burrup Hub, which has faced opposition from environmental groups.
