One Nation Announces Candidate for Farrer By-Election

One Nation has officially named its candidate for the upcoming Farrer by-election, following the resignation of former Liberal MP Sussan Ley. The by-election, scheduled for May 9, will determine the new representative for the southern New South Wales electorate.

Trigger for the By-Election

The vote was necessitated after Sussan Ley stepped down from parliament last month. Her departure came in the wake of being ousted as opposition leader by Angus Taylor within the Liberal Party. This political shift has set the stage for a competitive race in the Farrer region.

About the Electorate

Farrer is a vast electorate covering approximately 126,500 square kilometres. It includes key regional cities such as Albury and Griffith, and extends all the way to the South Australian border. This area is known for its agricultural significance and diverse communities.

One Nation's Candidate Selection

One Nation has chosen David Farley, a 69-year-old agribusiness and irrigation professional based in Narrandera, as its candidate. Party leader Pauline Hanson expressed strong confidence in Farley, highlighting his deep roots and extensive experience in the region.

"David Farley has deep roots in the region and a strong background in business and irrigated agriculture," Hanson stated. "I'm confident we have selected the right candidate for this critical by-election."

Farley's Campaign Priorities

David Farley outlined his key priorities, which align with One Nation's policies. He emphasized reducing the cost of living, scrapping net zero targets, and cutting mass immigration. Additionally, Farley plans to focus on water reform to support irrigation industries and oppose what he describes as Labor's policies affecting farmers and small businesses.

"I'm standing for One Nation to be the strong, independent voice in Canberra that communities in Farrer will need in the years to come," Farley said. "I'll focus on smarter water reform policies so irrigation industries across the Basin can prosper and communities in Farrer can thrive."

He also committed to championing apprenticeships for young people in the community, aiming to boost local employment opportunities.

Election Logistics

Voters are reminded that they have until April 8 to update their details with the Australian Electoral Commission. Formal candidate nominations will close on April 13, setting the final stage for the by-election campaign.

This by-election represents a significant moment for Farrer, as residents prepare to choose their next representative amidst ongoing political changes and regional challenges.
