Off-Duty Security Guard Fatally Attacked While Protecting Teenager at Melbourne Train Station
A young off-duty security guard has been identified as the man allegedly killed while trying to protect a teenage boy during a violent armed robbery at a train station in Melbourne's outer north. Aidan Becker, aged 22, tragically lost his life at Mernda station after he stepped in to assist a 14-year-old boy who was being assaulted around 5:50 PM on Friday evening.
Brutal Assault Described as 'Savage Attack' by Police
According to authorities, Becker walked the teenager away from the platform in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, the group of four offenders allegedly followed both individuals and then turned their aggression towards the Good Samaritan.
Homicide Squad Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L'Estrange described the incident on Saturday, stating, "Unfortunately, those four offenders followed both of them and then, in what could only be described as a savage attack, assaulted the 22-year-old male physically, both fists, kicking, and they used edged weapons."
The brutal assault involved punching, kicking, and attacks with an edged weapon, leaving bystanders rushing to perform first aid in a desperate attempt to save Becker's life. Paramedics arrived moments later, but tragically, Becker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Four Teenagers Arrested and Charged Following the Incident
Police swiftly arrested four males in connection with the fatal attack:
- A 16-year-old from the Whittlesea area
- A 17-year-old from Greater Geelong
- An 18-year-old from Mill Park
- A 17-year-old from the City of Yarra
Detective Acting Inspector L'Estrange emphasized the tragic nature of the situation, explaining, "This is just a tragic situation where our victim here is just a Good Samaritan who was trying to do the right thing. He's intervened, tried to protect this 14-year-old schoolboy, hasn't been aggressive at all, tried to remove him from the scene, and as a result of his interaction, he's now lost his life."
Legal Proceedings Underway for Multiple Defendants
Homicide Squad detectives have now charged the 17-year-old from Greater Geelong and the 16-year-old from the Whittlesea area with both murder and armed robbery. Both teenagers are scheduled to face a children's court at a later date.
The 18-year-old Mill Park man has also been charged with murder and armed robbery and was due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Sunday. Meanwhile, the fourth teenager, the 17-year-old from the City of Yarra, remains under police guard in hospital and has not yet been interviewed by investigators.
Major Crime detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this fatal attack, which has shocked the local community and raised concerns about public safety at train stations.
