Chalmers Budget Boosts CSIRO Geelong, Little Else for Region
Chalmers Budget: Major CSIRO Investment for Geelong

The federal budget handed down by Treasurer Jim Chalmers has delivered a major investment for the CSIRO in Geelong, but local leaders say the region has been largely overlooked in other areas.

CSIRO Funding Boost

The budget includes a significant funding increase for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Geelong, which is home to the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness. The investment is aimed at bolstering research and development in health and biosecurity, securing Geelong's position as a national hub for scientific innovation.

Local Reaction

While the CSIRO news was welcomed, Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan expressed disappointment that the city did not receive funding for other priority projects. “We are grateful for the CSIRO investment, but Geelong needs more support for infrastructure, housing, and community services,” Sullivan said. The mayor highlighted the need for federal assistance in upgrading the Geelong Ring Road and expanding public transport.

Member for Corio Richard Marles defended the budget, stating that the CSIRO funding is a long-term win for the region. “This investment will create jobs and drive economic growth for years to come,” Marles said. He acknowledged that not all requests could be met but promised continued advocacy for Geelong’s needs.

Missed Opportunities

Local business leaders echoed the mayor’s sentiments, noting that the budget lacked measures to address the rising cost of living and housing affordability. Geelong Chamber of Commerce CEO Jennifer Collins said, “While the CSIRO investment is positive, small businesses and families are struggling. We needed more direct support.”

The budget also allocated funds for national priorities such as renewable energy and aged care, but Geelong-specific projects like the proposed performing arts centre and waterfront redevelopment were not funded. Opposition MPs criticized the government for neglecting regional Victoria, calling the budget a “missed opportunity” for Geelong.

Looking Ahead

Despite the mixed reaction, the CSIRO investment is expected to strengthen Geelong’s reputation as a centre for scientific excellence. The funding will support research into emerging infectious diseases and biosecurity threats, building on the work already done at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness.

As the budget details continue to be analyzed, local leaders are calling for a more comprehensive approach to regional development. “We need a partnership with the federal government that addresses all our needs, not just one sector,” Mayor Sullivan concluded.
