Adelaide Car Crash Now Major Crime Probe Over Assault

Adelaide Car Crash Transforms into Major Crime Investigation After Assault Discovery

A late-night car crash in Adelaide's southern suburbs has taken a sinister turn, with police now treating the incident as a major crime after determining the driver's fatal injuries were not caused by the vehicle accident. Emergency services were called to Golflands View at Morphett Vale around 1.30am on Wednesday following reports of a red BMW colliding with an electricity pole.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old chef Caleb Leriano, was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by police and paramedics to save him. What initially appeared to be a tragic single-vehicle crash quickly escalated when authorities noticed inconsistencies between Caleb's injuries and the impact of the collision.

Injuries Inconsistent with Crash, Police Confirm Assault

Major Crime Detective Inspector Andrew Macrae stated that investigators are confident the injuries were "the result of an assault" rather than the crash itself. "Caleb's death is being treated as suspicious and has been declared a major crime," Macrae announced on Wednesday, urging the public to come forward with any information.

Police revealed that the attack was likely not random, with Caleb having driven his 2003 red BMW to the vicinity of Sapphire Reserve for a planned meeting shortly before the crash. "The reason for that meeting and what occurred there will be part of the investigation," Macrae added, highlighting the ongoing probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Extensive Crime Scene Examination and Public Appeal

Major Crime detectives, Southern District officers, and forensic teams spent hours meticulously examining the BMW and surrounding roadway, treating the area as an active crime scene. Two properties have been searched as part of the investigation, with several individuals assisting police with their inquiries.

In a bid to gather crucial evidence, investigators have released an image of Caleb's BMW and a map of key locations. They are appealing to anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from Sapphire Road between 12.30am and 1.30am to contact authorities immediately. The public's cooperation is seen as vital in piecing together the events leading up to this tragic and suspicious death.
