A forensic psychiatrist has determined that a Perth mother accused of murdering her eight-month-old baby is suffering from psychosis and is currently unfit to stand trial, according to court proceedings in Western Australia.
Mother Deemed 'Acutely Unwell' with Psychosis
Alanah Gail Smithwick, 28, appeared via videolink from Melaleuca Prison at Stirling Gardens Magistrate Court on Wednesday. Her lawyer revealed that forensic psychiatrist Dr Adam Brett, in a preliminary report, assessed Ms Smithwick as "acutely unwell" with psychosis.
While she understands the murder charge against her, the report indicates she would struggle to comprehend a trial and would be unable to properly defend herself in court.
Background of the Tragic Incident
The case stems from events on October 30, when homicide detectives discovered the deceased infant at a property on Winpara Way in Baldivis, a suburb south of Perth.
Ms Smithwick was arrested at the scene, where she was also found injured and subsequently taken to Rockingham General Hospital for medical treatment. It is understood the injuries were inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
Following the psychiatrist's findings, Ms Smithwick's legal team will seek to have her declared unfit for trial. A supplementary report is now being obtained to further assess her mental state ahead of her next court appearance scheduled for March 18.
The accused has remained in custody since her arrest, with the case drawing significant attention due to its tragic nature and the complex mental health considerations involved.
