Man pleads not guilty to Canberra party sexual assault

A 30-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and indecently assaulting a woman at a party in Canberra last year.

Court appearance and bail arguments

Henry Joseph Raisoqomi entered his plea via audio-visual link during a hearing at the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday, January 9, 2026. He faces one count of sexual intercourse without consent and one count of committing an act of indecency without consent.

Police prosecutors allege the offences occurred in June 2025 at a gathering in Canberra. They claim Raisoqomi sexually assaulted the woman, who was known to him, while she was asleep.

Prosecutor Madeleine Gallo opposed bail, telling the court there was a risk of witness interference. She stated that multiple witnesses were still to be interviewed and that Raisoqomi had attempted to contact the alleged victim after she asked him not to.

Defence case and bail outcome

Defence lawyer James McGuire argued for bail, highlighting his client's lack of criminal history and consistent employment since moving to Australia from Fiji in 2011. Mr McGuire said there was "no suggestion of there being any form of threat" to witnesses and warned his client would face a lengthy remand period before any potential trial.

Magistrate Jane Campbell ultimately granted bail with strict conditions. Raisoqomi must not contact any witnesses connected to the case. He is scheduled to return to court next month.
