Disqualified Driver High on Meth Arrested in Windang Blitz

A 49-year-old man, allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine while driving an unregistered SUV, has been apprehended by police in Windang, highlighting a broader crackdown on drug-affected motorists across the Illawarra region. The incident occurred on Friday, March 6, around 5:40 PM, when officers spotted the vehicle on Windang Road and conducted a roadside drug test that returned positive for meth.

Further investigations revealed the driver's license was suspended until May 2027, and he was subject to an outstanding warrant, according to a NSW Police spokesperson. The individual was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple offences, including driving while disqualified, operating an unregistered vehicle, and driving without insurance. He has been served notice to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday, March 10.

Operation Spoiler Targets Dangerous Drivers

This arrest was part of Operation Spoiler, a day-long police blitz that ran from 6 AM on Friday until 2 AM on Saturday, specifically targeting dangerous drivers and recidivist traffic offenders. During the operation, law enforcement officers achieved significant results in their efforts to enhance road safety.

  • A total of 47 drug-affected drivers were caught, including the 49-year-old from Windang.
  • Ten drunk drivers were charged, along with two motorists who had both drugs and alcohol in their system.
  • Police conducted nine vehicle and person searches and administered 1,824 roadside tests.
  • Officers issued 247 fines, eight defect notices, and detected 32 licence offences.

Operation Spoiler continues as police maintain a vigilant presence on Illawarra roads, aiming to deter further incidents and ensure community safety. The blitz underscores ongoing concerns about drug-impaired driving in the area, with authorities urging motorists to adhere to traffic laws and avoid operating vehicles under the influence of substances.

The case of the 49-year-old driver serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences and public safety risks associated with drug-affected driving, as police remain committed to cracking down on such behaviour through targeted operations like Spoiler.
