Perth Couple Celebrates Love with Multicultural Wedding Fusion
Charleen and Erin Tiwari-Clise have a favorite photo from their wedding that holds a special place in their home, proudly displayed on their refrigerator. The image captures their radiant smiles, vibrant lehengas—traditional Indian three-piece outfits sourced from Mumbai over many cups of chai—and the picturesque setting of Nikola Estate in Perth. This venue was one of several chosen to showcase the best of the city for their international guests.
Intricate Details and Cultural Blends
Upon closer inspection, the photo reveals intricate bridal mehendi, or henna, designs that swirl across their hands. Artists Jungi and Menhshooq spent an impressive 13 hours creating these patterns, which cleverly hide each other's names within the canvas of their hands. On the wedding day, the couple playfully raced to see who could find the other's name first.
This sense of playfulness, combined with a foundation of deep love and respect, guided Charleen and Erin as they planned a wedding that beautifully blended their Indian and Scottish cultures, ensuring every detail reflected their unique personalities.
A Journey of Love and Identity
Charleen recalls knowing quickly that Erin was the person she would marry, while Erin fondly remembers how Charleen's confidence and eye contact would make her blush. Four years after their first date, Charleen describes the core of their relationship as a readiness to embrace each other's family and culture.
"Through Erin, I have learned to feel even more proud of who I am—not just my heritage, but every part of me," Charleen says. "To this day, she encourages me to stand tall in my identity and show the world my true self, which I will be forever grateful for."
Months of Planning and Festive Celebrations
As self-confessed big planners, Charleen and Erin spent over 12 months organizing their wedding, aiming to keep it as stress-free as possible—naturally, with the help of several spreadsheets. The celebrations began the day before their nuptials with the Haldi, a pre-wedding ritual where guests apply turmeric paste to the couple to symbolize cleansing and purification.
"It was a beautiful event overlooking City Beach, with the brightest blue sky and glittering ocean," Erin shares.
After a quick change and shower to wash off the bright paste, the afternoon transitioned into the Sangeet, meaning music and dance in Hindi. Guests enjoyed choreographed dances to Bollywood music, followed by a night of open-floor dancing.
"It was so special watching the dances, knowing everyone had practised together in the days and weeks beforehand, often via FaceTime as many of our friends were travelling from interstate or overseas," Charleen adds.
Ceremony and Reception Highlights
The joy continued into their ceremony and reception at the Swan Valley's Nikola Estate. The event began with Hindu rituals led by their Pandit-ji, followed by a civil celebrant officiating where the couple exchanged personal vows and officially tied the knot.
Ensuring family involvement was a priority, with their sisters participating in the Gath Bandhan—tying together their dupattas, or shawl-like scarves, to symbolize inseparability. A special moment for Erin's Scottish heritage family was the playing of bagpipes performing Highland Cathedral when they were pronounced married.
"We laughed our way through the ceremony—whispering silly comments or jokes to each other, sharing smiles with our close family and friends, and just genuinely having so much fun," Erin says.
This multicultural wedding not only celebrated Charleen and Erin's love but also highlighted the beauty of blending diverse traditions in a heartfelt and personal way.
