Wallsend Couple Marks 70 Years of Marriage After Soccer Match Spark
As a 19-year-old John Morrow dashed across the soccer pitch in 1952, he caught sight of a girl his age smiling at him from the sidelines. Seven decades later, John and his wife, Marion Morrow, now 93 and 92 respectively, sit in their Wallsend home, fondly reminiscing about that fateful day that ignited their lifelong romance.
A Smile That Led to a Lifetime Together
"She used to walk from Jesmond to the soccer ground, and I used to see her sitting close to the sidelines," Mr Morrow recounted. "I found that she was lovely then and she's been lovely ever since." Mrs Morrow, while not recalling the initial smile, vividly remembers spotting John playing soccer and feeling an immediate attraction. "I love everything about him," she expressed warmly.
Both raised in the Newcastle region, with Mrs Morrow near Jesmond and Wallsend and Mr Morrow bordering Elermore Vale and Wallsend, their courtship blossomed through visits to the local cinema. Their engagement was sealed during a ferry ride back from Stockton, setting the stage for a wedding that faced delays due to Mr Morrow's national service conscription while he worked as an apprentice at BHP.
Overcoming Obstacles and Building a Family
Mr Morrow served in the amphibious unit in Newcastle and was involved in the Stockton Bight disaster, a tragic military operation. After completing his service, the couple finally married in 1956 at the old Methodist church in Jesmond, where Mrs Morrow's parents had also tied the knot. They moved into their Wallsend home in 1957, where they have resided ever since.
Due to societal norms of the time, Mrs Morrow left her job at the Hunter District Water Board, now Hunter Water, as married women were barred from employment. She dedicated herself to raising their family, which grew to include four children, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Throughout the years, Mrs Morrow attended all of John's soccer matches, while he supported her musical pursuits in a local choir.
A Life of Shared Adventures and Lasting Happiness
"We had the luck to be able to do a lot of travel in Australia and a couple of other places and countries, and so we have been very fortunate," Mr Morrow noted, reflecting on their many adventures together. Celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, March 24, surrounded by loved ones, the Morrows expressed profound gratitude for their enduring partnership.
"It is just astounding ... it is something that we don't have any control over but it's been wonderful," Mr Morrow said. "I would hate to be alone and not have a companion who's intelligent and interesting and makes life really happy." Their story stands as a testament to love, resilience, and the simple joys that began with a smile at a soccer match in Wallsend.
