Former AFL Player Tommy Sheridan's Harrowing Hospital Experience After Mysterious Sleep Incident
Former Fremantle Dockers and GWS Giants winger Tommy Sheridan has opened up about a terrifying medical emergency that left him fearing for his life. The 32-year-old athlete turned podcaster experienced a frightening sequence of events after apparently knocking himself out while sleeping.
Mysterious Sleep Incident Leads to Hospital Emergency
Sheridan appeared on his FAF Fridays podcast with former Giants teammate Dylan Buckley sporting a noticeable black eye, which he immediately addressed. "I've knocked myself out in my sleep, which is not great. Don't know how," Sheridan explained during the Footy and Friends-Ausmerican Aces collaboration show.
The situation escalated when Sheridan went back to sleep after the initial incident, then later fainted in the bathroom and struck his head on the tiles. "I was in emergency all day Tuesday, it was actually quite serious," he revealed, describing the ordeal as "horror, horror."
Comprehensive Medical Testing and Anxious Wait
The former footballer spent the entire day at the hospital with his mother, undergoing a battery of medical tests to assess his condition. Medical staff conducted brain scans, electrocardiograms (ECG), and blood tests, all of which fortunately returned normal results.
Sheridan described the anxious waiting period as particularly distressing. "Sitting in emergency, if you want really just that reality check, and then going to get your brain scanned, your heart done, your bloods, and then waiting for the doctor to come back five hours later — I was sitting there going, 'This could be it. This could be it'," he confessed.
Carpet Burn Mystery and Living Alone Concerns
Interestingly, the black eye visible during the podcast recording wasn't from the bathroom fall but rather from carpet burn. Sheridan believes he must have fallen out of bed and performed what he called "the worm" on the floor. "It's actually carpet burn, so I must have just fell out of bed and just done 'the worm' on the floor," he explained.
The situation was complicated by the fact that Sheridan lives alone, adding to the concern about what exactly transpired during the night. "And I live on my own. I've just got no idea what happened," he admitted, highlighting the mystery surrounding the entire incident.
Football Career Background and Current Status
Tommy Sheridan played 81 games for the Fremantle Dockers between 2012 and 2018, followed by two additional games for the GWS Giants in 2019 and 2020 before transitioning to media work. Despite the frightening experience, Sheridan insisted he has recovered from the incident.
"I'm all good, I'm fine. It's just, it was quite scary Tuesday," he assured listeners, though the experience clearly left a significant impression on him. The former athlete's candid revelation provides a sobering reminder of how quickly routine situations can turn into medical emergencies, even for someone in peak physical condition.
