Clever redesign of Carrington workers' cottage maximizes space

A compact workers' cottage in Carrington has undergone a remarkable transformation, with every square metre meticulously designed to maximize functionality and style. The three-bedroom, one-bathroom home at 8 Mathieson Street is now on the market, listed with Patrick Skinner and Donna Spillane of Spillane Property.

Full renovation of 1910-built cottage

The owners, Jess Vadori and her husband Daniel, spent four months completing a full renovation of the 1910-built cottage, which sits on a 152-square-metre block. The couple stripped the house back to its frame, installing new walls, floors, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

"When we first purchased it, it needed a lot of work," said Jess Vadori, an interior designer and stylist. "We made significant changes throughout the house. We wanted to create a home that feels warm, timeless, and highly functional, despite being a smaller space."

Modern industrial design with local touches

The renovation blends modern industrial design with warmth and practicality. The kitchen features polished concrete benchtops and a breakfast bar built from reclaimed timber sourced from an old church. The owners worked with local trades and suppliers, including Carrington-based Earp Bros for tiles and a local antique store for European-inspired kitchen pendants. Bathroom handles were crafted from reclaimed telegraph poles.

"Every element feels connected to the area and carries its own unique story," Jess added.

Outdoor living and versatile studio

At the rear, bi-fold doors open to a covered outdoor area with a deck leading to a brick-paved courtyard. A separate studio in the backyard, currently used to store surfboards, could serve as a home office, creative space, or retreat. Jess noted, "My favourite part of the home is actually the outdoor area. We wanted it to feel like an extension of the indoors: calm, open, and perfect for relaxing or entertaining." The couple also added a large veggie garden.

First renovation project sparks passion

This was the first renovation project for Jess and Daniel, who works as a plumber. They are already preparing to embark on their second renovation after buying another house nearby. "It really sparked our love for designing homes," Jess said.

Auction details and market context

The cottage will be auctioned on May 23 with a guide of $875,000. Listing agent Patrick Skinner described it as "the quintessential Carrington cottage." He praised the owners for opening up the space and making it feel warm and inviting, highlighting the Venetian plaster in the master bedroom and concrete benchtops in the kitchen. "It would suit a downsizer who doesn't want to lift a finger, investors, and also first home buyers, so it ticks the box for a lot of people," he said.

Property records show the house last sold in 2017 for $530,000. The median house value in Carrington is $1.22 million.
