A South Australian community is in shock after a 39-year-old local woman was fatally attacked by her own pet dog inside her home.

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at a residence on Murphy Crescent in Whyalla, located on the Eyre Peninsula. The victim has been identified as Christine Kulis, aged 39.
Her pet dog, described as a pitbull mastiff cross, launched a violent assault. The attack was so severe that Ms Kulis's partner attempted to intervene with a meat cleaver in a desperate bid to stop the dog, which had refused to release her.

Emergency services rushed to the home around 4:00 pm following reports of the attack. Despite their efforts, Ms Kulis could not be saved.
