A 77-year-old woman has tragically lost her life after being struck by her own vehicle in a shopping centre car park on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, casting a shadow over the community just two days before Christmas.
A Tragic Afternoon in Tewantin
The incident occurred at approximately 3.45pm on Tuesday in the car park of the Woolworths shopping centre on Poinciana Avenue in Tewantin. The elderly woman was discovered with critical head injuries. Queensland Police confirmed that her white Volkswagen T-Cross reversed over her, with no other vehicles or people involved in the collision.
Desperate Efforts to Save a Life
Emergency services were quickly on the scene, with paramedics performing CPR in a desperate attempt to revive the woman. Despite their sustained efforts, she could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the location. The event was witnessed by several shocked shoppers, many of whom rushed to offer assistance before professional help arrived.
One witness, Steph Church, spoke to The Courier Mail, expressing her concern for those who saw the horrific accident unfold. "To the people who witnessed the accident, I hope you are OK. Please talk to someone if you need," she said.
Church also praised the actions of a man who tried to help the victim. "To the gentleman who assisted in trying to control the bleeding, you did an amazing job. You were clearly shaken afterwards. Take care of yourself mate."
Community in Mourning Before Christmas
The fatal accident has sent waves of grief through the local community during what is typically a festive season. Church's comments highlighted the broader impact of the tragedy, stating, "It’s a hard time for the family of this lady and the people who witnessed the horrific incident."
As is standard procedure following a sudden death, police will prepare a report for the coroner to determine the exact circumstances that led to this heartbreaking outcome. The investigation will seek to provide answers in the wake of the community's loss.
