Wollongong Hospital Completes Major $21.9 Million Medical Imaging Upgrade
A significant $21.9 million upgrade at Wollongong Hospital has been finalized, introducing state-of-the-art medical imaging equipment designed to enhance diagnostic capabilities and patient care in the Illawarra region. The project includes the installation of a new MRI and CT scanner within a purpose-built, two-level department, though full operational status is expected to take a few more months.
Enhanced Diagnostic Access and Expanded Services
The new CT scanner is strategically co-located within the emergency department, enabling faster access to critical diagnostic services for patients. This upgrade also features a relocated medical ambulatory care unit and an expanded transit lounge, which were completed in the previous year. According to Minister for Health Ryan Park, the state government is committed to delivering essential health infrastructure to meet the needs of the growing community.
"The completion of these upgrades marks an important step in strengthening services at Wollongong Hospital," Park stated. "I'm absolutely thrilled to see the improvements to our outpatient and assessment spaces, along with the installation of new MRI and CT scanners. That will support better patient care and ensure more timely access to diagnostic care close to home."
Future Expansion and Community Impact
Beyond the immediate upgrades, the $21.9 million investment includes funding for future expansion, complemented by an additional $220 million allocated towards the planning of the Wollongong Hospital and Health Precinct. The new imaging department will significantly increase capacity, offering a broader range of diagnostic services such as breast imaging, biopsy services, and cardiac imaging.
Commissioning and staff training for the new CT scanner and MRI have already commenced, with both services anticipated to become operational within the next month. This development follows the initial announcement in November 2024 and involved temporary closures on Crown Street in October 2025 to facilitate installation.
Overall, this upgrade represents a substantial advancement in local healthcare infrastructure, promising improved efficiency and expanded medical services for residents in the Wollongong area.
