Major Police Crackdown Targets Easter Holiday Drivers Across Australia
Thousands of Australians heading home after the Easter long weekend are encountering a significant police crackdown, as authorities issue stern warnings against taking risks on the roads. States nationwide have launched extensive enforcement operations focused on drink driving and speeding, with Victoria reporting a notable surge in fines.
Victoria Records Sharp Spike in Infringements
Victoria Police have revealed that more than 6,000 fines were issued in just the first four days of the Easter operation. This represents a substantial 30 per cent increase in infringements compared to the same period last year, highlighting both intensified policing efforts and persistent risky behaviour among drivers.
Victoria Police Acting Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing Justin Goldsmith emphasised that officers will maintain a strong presence as the holiday period concludes. "There's been a lot of travel over the Easter period. We expect that there's going to be a lot of people in Victoria that are going to be driving home today," Goldsmith stated.
"We've had a really strong presence over the last five days, and the presence will be equally as strong today. It's just trying to keep people safe on the roads."
Authorities Express Concern Over Non-Compliance
Goldsmith expressed deep concern about the level of non-compliance observed during this high-risk period, despite repeated warnings from authorities. "Unfortunately, we do see a lot of non-compliance, even at these really high-risk periods, despite all the warnings. And that's a real concern to us," he said.
The police official noted that while enforcement engagement has been robust, they would prefer to see greater public cooperation. "It's a good level of engagement from our members, but we'd love to see the public coming along for the ride and complying with the road rules instead of forcing our hand to have to issue as many infringements."
