The West Hockey Club is set to make a vibrant statement this weekend as players pull on purple socks for a special cause. The club is hosting a dementia fundraiser, with all proceeds going to support research and care for those affected by the condition.
Purple Socks Initiative
Players across all grades will don the distinctive purple socks during their matches on Saturday. The initiative aims to raise awareness about dementia, a condition that impacts millions of Australians and their families. Club president Sarah Thompson said the idea came from a player whose family has been personally affected by dementia.
"It's a cause that hits close to home for many of our members," Thompson said. "We wanted to do something visible and meaningful to show our support and help raise much-needed funds."
Community Support
The club has partnered with Dementia Australia for the event. Donation buckets will be placed at the canteen and clubhouse, and spectators are encouraged to contribute. Local businesses have also sponsored the socks, ensuring all money raised goes directly to the charity.
"The response from our community has been overwhelming," Thompson added. "We've had families of players, former members, and local residents all reaching out to offer support."
Game Day Details
The fundraiser coincides with the club's home games at Townsville Hockey Fields. Matches will run from 8:30 AM to late afternoon. The club is inviting everyone to come along, watch some great hockey, and donate to a worthy cause.
In addition to the sock initiative, there will be a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses. All funds raised will be presented to Dementia Australia at the end of the month.
"We hope this becomes an annual event," Thompson said. "Dementia doesn't take a break, and neither should our efforts to fight it."
